The Solar Guide
Does Solar Add Value to Real Estate?
Yes!
And there is some good research to back this up.
According to the ABS almost 1 in 4 Australian households have a solar powered system installed on their roof.
Home Owners
85% of respondents to an Australian survey conducted by Origin identified solar rooftop panels as something which adds to a property’s value.
Property Investors
A 2015 survey of renters by realestate.com.au found three quarters would pay additional rent to live in a property with solar energy. Two out of five respondents saying they’d be willing to pay an extra $10 a week.
How much?
There is no definitive figure. American research reported here and here shows increases in value of between $15,000 and $25,000 for a 5kW system.
A report from the Australian Bureau of Statistics in 2010 suggested that increasing the energy rating of a house worth $365,000 by just half a star could increase its value by an average of $4,500.
Pro Tip: Just because you can’t see them doesn’t mean they’re not there. The majority of solar systems are installed on the side or back of roofs.
